A.3A: Phase 1

Updated: Aug 30, 2025

Scenario 1

1)      The Role of Health and Well-Being – Biophilic Design
  • I’m going to gather data on the mental and physical health of residents within the neighborhood of Ivy City, Washington D.C.

    • How does the lack of biophilic design elements within Ivy City influence the mental and physical health outcomes of its residents?

2)      The Role of Sustainability – Environmental
  • The neighborhood has extremely minimal greenery and is heavily polluted.

    • Can the incorporation of environmentally sustainable infrastructure aid in enhancing residents’ quality of life?

3)      The Role of Urban Design – Tactical Urbanism
  • I would like to implement low-cost, short-term, scalable interventions such as pop-up green spaces and temporary pedestrian plazas.

    • What impact do these tactical urbanism strategies have on the mental and physical health of Ivy City residents?

Scenario 2

1)      The Role of Climate Change in Informing Design Resilience
  • I would like to examine the future effects of sea level rise on the state of Florida, focusing on Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

    • How can we design buildings to stand the test of time, given the future threat of sea level rise and coastal flooding?

2)      The Role of Material Exploration
  • How can bio-based and regenerative materials contribute to flood-resistant and adaptive architectural solutions in Florida?

3)      The Role of Emerging Technologies – Parametric
  • What parametric design tools can help to facilitate the exploration of flood-resistant materials and structural systems for coastal resilience in Florida?

Scenario 3

1)      The Role of Social Responsibility – Agency
  • I'm investigating how social responsibility (agency) influences architectural design in post-hurricane rebuilding efforts in New Orleans, Louisiana.

    • How does participatory design influence the development of resilient housing solutions in post-hurricane New Orleans?

2)      The Role of “The Other”
  • What architectural strategies can ensure that post-disaster rebuilding efforts in New Orleans prioritize marginalized communities?

3)      The Role of Health and Well-Being – Bioclimatic Design
  • How can bioclimatic design contribute to community resilience and well-being in post-hurricane recovery efforts in New Orleans?
